The Tragedy

The 2015 earthquake in Nepal was undoubtedly a huge tragedy for all people residing throughout Nepal. For some, they lost a family member or a close relative in this devastating event while for others, they lost their property which they worked their entire life to put together. Beautiful buildings collapsed and fear engulfed in everybody's heart. Everyone was scared to even go into their houses, the place which is supposed to be the safest. Shivers ran through the bodies of Nepalese people while the several aftershocks kept rocking the Nepali land over and over again.

But although this event was so horrifying and devastating on several levels, I noticed something during it which I really think about today as well. It was like a light in that super dark time. I found that everybody, irrespective of where they reside or what occupation they were involved in, came together and helped each other in this time of need. There was no superior or inferior. Everybody was really approachable and willing to help.

Even personally, I found myself speaking with people I had never spoken to before and we got to know many different people. I made several new friends, and spent a lot of time with them. Maybe the fact that the schools and offices were closed was also the reason for this level of cooperation among people. But I found high levels of unity and empathy everywhere I went during that time.

Therefore, while the 2015 earthquake was one of the darkest times in Nepali history, the unity and cooperation among people was definitely a positive thing that came out of the incident.
